FAFSA or WASFA? Intro to Financial Aid

Let’s figure out which financial aid form is right for you!

Financial aid is necessary for applying to college, because who doesn’t love free money, right?? But where does the money come from? The most reliable place to get financial aid is through the national or state government. The national government fund for college education is the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The Washington state version of that is the WASFA (Washington Application for Student Financial Aid). You can use these to gain access to grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study. (Not sure what these are? Check here.)

Do you have to fill out both forms?? NO! You should only fill out one. So which one should you fill out? Check out the eligibility requirements below:

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) – For any student who has US citizenship or a green card

WASFA (Washington Application for Student Financial Aid) – For any student who does not have US citizenship and/or is an undocumented immigrant
